Athlete Categorisation

Understanding Categorisation

Categorisation is a formal process where athletes are classified into different performance levels based on their ability, potential, and current competition results. This helps ensure that resources, such as funding, coaching, training facilities, and support services, are allocated efficiently to athletes who have the greatest chance of success at the highest levels of competition (e.g., World Championships or Paralympic Games).

The Role of Categorisation in Boccia and the Sport System

1.    Identifying Potential: Categorisation helps Boccia Australia identify athletes with the greatest potential to contribute to national performance targets (such as the Paralympic Games or World Championships). This process uses a combination of objective results (competition outcomes) and subjective assessments (training commitment, coachability, physical and mental resilience).

2.   Support Allocation: Athletes who are categorised as having podium potential are prioritised for more intensive support, including access to high-performance programs, sports science support, and funding. Those who are categorised as "emerging" or "developmental" may still receive guidance, but at a lower level of intensity.

3.    Tracking Progress: Categorisation is not static; athletes are regularly reviewed and recategorised as they progress. This ensures that the most promising athletes are receiving the right support at the right time to help them achieve their full potential.

4.    Pathway Clarity:  Categorisation provides a clear pathway for athletes, helping them understand their standing in the performance pathway and what they need to work on to move to the next level. For example, athletes who are categorised as "emerging" can aim to meet the necessary criteria (training, competition results, and other performance metrics) to move into a higher category over time.
