Australian Boccia Back On Top Of The Podium

Published Tue 09 Sep 2025

Australia’s boccia stars, Dan Michel and Jamieson Leeson, together with their ramp assistants Ash Maddern and Jasmine Haydon, delivered a powerful performance at the Seoul 2025 World Boccia Cup, capturing gold in the BC3 Pairs event with a comprehensive 8-0 final win over Poland, after edging out Greece 4-3 in a tense semi-final—marking the team’s first major international win in over two years.

“There’s always a bit of nerves going into a gold medal match...But we played Poland earlier on in the competition and we had a good win against them. We knew what we were in for and what to expect from them, so we were about as prepared as we could have been and it went really well," said Leeson.

Michel said: “It was a really good competition, both individuals and pairs. Jam and I both played really well and it was really nice to finish it off with a gold medal, finally our first gold medal in a couple of years. It was awesome.
“It’s definitely very rewarding to get back to the top of the podium. It was a really great match for us, so it’s a nice way to do it.”

In the individual BC3 events, Michel and Maddern claimed silver after a hard-fought battle against Japan’s Keisuke Kawamoto, while Leeson and Haydon took bronze in the BC3 female event, rounding out an exceptional campaign for the Australians.

With momentum from Seoul, the team now looks ahead to next year’s World Championships, also in Korea, confident and motivated. Huge thanks to HP Coach Luke Kelly and the support staff for their vital role in this success.
