Boccia Athletes Among Para Athlete Barrier Fund Recipients: Breaking Down Barriers in Australian Para-sport

Published Fri 05 Sep 2025

The Para Athlete Barrier Fund, part of the Australian Government’s Para Uplift initiative, delivers grants of up to $4,000 to help athletes overcome the hurdles posed by equipment, travel, carer, and support costs. Originating from the largest-ever survey of Australia’s Para sport system, the fund precisely targets real challenges faced by athletes, directly impacting their pathway to medals and high performance.

The athletes receiving up to $4000 through the Para Athlete Barrier Fund include:

Dylan Schwarz   Emerging
Ashlee Maddern   Podium
Jean-Paul La Fontaine   Developing
Lachlan Kavanagh  Emerging

Boccia Australia are immensly proud of these athletes. Their determination and commitment have earned them this support, ensuring they can focus on their sport rather than financial struggles. The grant means these athletes can access better gear, expert coaching, and top-tier training environments.

With a government investment of $54.9 million doubling previous commitments, Para Uplift aims to make Brisbane 2032 Australia’s most successful Games—by supporting not just medal hopes, but also improving athlete classification, access to fit-for-purpose training, and world-class coaching and performance support.

Minister for Sport the Hon Anika Wells said the Australian Government is committed to removing barriers that are often imposed on Para-athletes.

“The impact of the Para Athlete Barrier Fund and Para Uplift cannot be underestimated. For the 122 athletes named today, these grants will be the difference between being able to continue their dreams of wearing the green and gold or being financially forced into retirement,” Minister Wells said.

“Providing the right resources to the right people at the right time is how we will break the barriers that Para-athletes face and allow them to reach their full potential in sport and in life.”
